WHO & WHERE IN SAN DIEGO WE SERVE

Perhaps you’ve gone to the dentist, discovered a gum issue and need some specialty care. That’s where we come in. Welcome to Poway Perio, the Poway periodontal specialty office serving Poway and the surrounding San Diego area.

We are proud to serve residents of Poway, and nearby San Diego neighborhoods such as Carmel Mountain Ranch, Rancho Bernardo, Miramar, Rancho Peñasquitos, 4S Ranch, Scripps Ranch, Escondido, Mira Mesa, Carmel Valley and Ramona.

Fun fact: Periodontal means “around the tooth.” True to the word’s origin, we’re devoted to serving bones around teeth. Everyone has different periodontal needs, from gum grafting to treatment of periodontal disease, and we want to make sure you get the care you need.

Minimally Invasive Procedures

One of the unique aspects of our practice is our philosophy to employ conservative approaches for periodontal treatments. Minimally invasive procedures like Microsurgical Soft Tissue Regeneration and the application of biological mediators, or Platelet Rich Plasma, for tissue engineering are our main focuses.

Cutting-Edge Technology for Easy Recovery

We are dedicated to using the latest surgical techniques that can promote faster recovery and minimize post-op discomfort. Through the following practices, we prioritize your comfort and aim to make your experience as painless as possible.

Platelet rich plasma (PRP)

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is a concentrated blood sample that contains high levels of platelets, a critical component of the wound healing process. Platelets contain growth factors that are responsible for stimulating tissue generation and repair.

Clinical studies have shown that application of PRP can help reduce bleeding, minimize pain, reduce infection rates, and optimize overall healing.

Learn more about how we use PRP to make your procedure and recovery as comfortable and painless possible.

Cone Beam Tomography

Utilizing cone beam technologies in our practice provides us with great advantages in maxillofacial imaging. Cone beam CT gives detailed images of the jaw bones and is performed to evaluate diseases of the jaw, dentition, and bony structures of the face, nasal cavity and sinuses.

Dental cone beam CT is commonly used for treatment planning and is also useful for more complex cases that involve:

  • Periodontal diseases
  • Surgical planning for impacted teeth
  • Diagnosing temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ)
  • Accurate placement of dental implants
  • Evaluation of the jaw, sinuses, nerve canals and nasal cavity
  • Determining bone structure and tooth orientation
  • Locating the origin of pain or pathology
Laser Treatment of Gum Disease

Lasers can be used to treat periodontal disease. Current controlled studies have shown that similar results have been found with the laser compared to specific other treatment options, including scaling and root planing alone. Scaling and root planning is a traditional non-surgical therapy used to treat periodontal diseases.

The PerioLase® laser is used as part of Laser Periodontal Treatment to remove harmful bacteria and diseased tissue from the gum pocket by passing a laser light between gum and tooth. The laser uses heat to strip away the diseased gum.

Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease that affects your teeth and the area around your teeth, like your gums.

Early periodontal disease, known commonly as gingivitis, can often be taken care of and even reversed with mindful dental care, such as teeth brushing, flossing, using of mouthwash and having regular visits to your dentist.

PERIODONTAL TREATMENT

At Poway Perio, in San Diego we only recommend surgical periodontal treatments when necessary. If initial steps or steps aren’t successful, we may recommend surgery to help get your teeth and gums back to health.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is periodontal disease, and how does it affect my oral health?

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is an infection that affects the gum tissue and bone that support your teeth. It can range from mild gingivitis to more severe periodontitis, which can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. The bacteria that cause periodontal disease can also affect other parts of your body, including your heart and lungs.

What are the signs and symptoms of periodontal disease?

The signs and symptoms of periodontal disease can include bleeding gums, swollen or tender gums, bad breath, receding gums, loose teeth, and changes in the way your teeth fit together when you bite. If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to schedule an appointment with a periodontist as soon as possible.

What treatments do you offer for periodontal disease?

At Poway Perio, we offer a range of treatments for periodontal disease, including deep cleanings (scaling and root planing), laser therapy, gum grafting, bone grafting, and dental implants. We will work with you to determine the best treatment plan for your individual needs.

Can periodontal disease be prevented?

Yes, periodontal disease can be prevented by practicing good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and using an antiseptic mouthwash. It’s also important to maintain regular dental checkups and cleanings to detect any potential issues early on.

What are dental implants, and how can they benefit me?

Dental implants are a permanent tooth replacement option that involves surgically placing a small titanium post into the jawbone to support a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants can improve your oral health, appearance, and function, and they can last for many years with proper care.

Do you offer sedation dentistry for patients with dental anxiety?

Yes, we offer sedation dentistry options to help patients feel more comfortable and relaxed during their appointments. We can discuss your options for sedation dentistry during your consultation.

What is LANAP, and how does it compare to traditional gum surgery?

LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure) is a minimally invasive laser treatment for periodontal disease that can be an alternative to traditional gum surgery. It uses a laser to remove infected tissue and promote the growth of healthy tissue, without the need for incisions or sutures. LANAP can result in less pain, swelling, and downtime than traditional gum surgery.

Can you provide me with before and after photos of your previous periodontal cases?

Yes, we can provide you with before and after photos of our previous periodontal cases. We believe that seeing real-life examples of our work can help patients understand what to expect from their own treatment.

What payment and financing options do you offer for periodontal treatments?

At Poway Perio, we accept a range of payment options, including cash, checks, credit cards, and CareCredit. We also work with most insurance plans and can help you navigate your coverage. We can discuss your payment and financing options during your consultation.

What is Poway Perio’s approach to dental implant procedures?

At Poway Perio, we take a comprehensive approach to dental implant procedures to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients. Here is an overview of how we typically deal with dental implants:

  1. Initial Consultation: During your initial consultation, we will evaluate your oral health, review your medical history, and take 3D images of your jawbone to determine whether you are a good candidate for dental implants.
  2. Treatment Planning: If dental implants are the right choice for you, we will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses your individual needs and concerns. This may include a combination of procedures such as bone grafting or a sinus lift to ensure you have adequate bone density to support the implant.
  3. Implant Placement: During the implant placement procedure, we will surgically insert a small titanium post into your jawbone. The implant will fuse with the bone over time to create a stable foundation for the replacement tooth.
  4. Healing and Integration: After the dental implant is placed, you will need to wait several months for the implant to fully integrate with the bone. During this time, we may provide you with a temporary tooth replacement option.
  5. Final Restoration: Once the implant has fully integrated, we will scan your implant and send it to your restorative dentist for the final crown. The final restoration will look and function like natural teeth, allowing you to eat, speak, and smile with confidence.

Throughout the entire dental implant process, our periodontal team at Poway Perio will provide you with personalized care and support to ensure your comfort and satisfaction with your treatment. We also offer sedation options to help you relax during the procedure, and we will provide you with detailed instructions for post-treatment care and follow-up appointments to ensure a successful outcome.
